A kapok pillow is particularly worth considering if you want plant-based filling and the option to adjust its height yourself. Choose a model with adjustable filling: remove a little if it feels too high, or add a little if it feels too low, then try it again on your own mattress. This is more useful than seeking one correct weight in grams. Not every model opens, and more filling does not automatically mean better support.

The height should suit you and your mattress
A pillow can feel different on a soft mattress and a firm one. When your shoulder sinks further into the mattress, the distance between your head and the sleeping surface changes.
Try the pillow in your usual sleeping position. Comfort is individual, and there is no single correct kapok pillow for everyone. Seek individual advice if you have persistent neck pain.
Adjustable filling gives you more options
Some kapok pillows have an opening that lets you remove filling or add more. Check the specific model; this does not automatically apply to every size.
Make small adjustments, distribute the filling evenly and, if needed, keep any spare filling dry in a sealed bag. Handle loose filling gently to avoid spreading unnecessary dust.
How does the filling respond to pressure?
Yan and colleagues studied kapok fibre assemblies under dry and humid conditions and at pressures of up to 100 kPa. The humid samples showed poorer compression recovery than the dry ones, and the fibres' hollow structure could be flattened.
The experiment helps explain why moisture and mechanical stress are relevant material properties. It does not tell us how many years a pillow will last or how all pillows change during normal use. Continue to follow the model's care instructions.

A natural material is not an allergy guarantee
Kapok is often marketed as allergy-friendly, but the type of filling alone does not make a pillow allergy-safe. Professional guidance on house dust mites describes cleaning, humidity control and tightly woven protective covers as parts of a combined approach.
The guidance does not establish kapok as a treatment. The cited sources do not establish fewer allergy symptoms from using kapok pillows either. If you have a diagnosed allergy, the product's cleaning options should be compatible with your professional advice.

Are all kapok pillows adjustable?
No. Look for a zip and an explicit statement that the amount of filling can be changed.
How much kapok filling does a pillow need?
There is no single weight in grams that suits every pillow. The pillow's dimensions, construction and desired height matter. Adjust only models designed for it: follow the manufacturer's guidance, make small changes and try the pillow in your usual sleeping position on your own mattress. More filling does not automatically mean better support.
Are kapok pillows necessary for babies?
This guide is about adult pillows. Choosing a material is not a safety recommendation for infants; follow the Danish Health Authority's current advice on safe sleep.

Laboratory study comparing dry and humid kapok fibre assemblies under conditions including 100 kPa pressure. Explores how filling responds to moisture and loading but does not establish a washing method or a particular lifespan.
Professional guidance from 2013 on washing, humidity control and tightly woven protective covers as parts of reducing exposure to house dust mite allergens. Fewer allergens do not guarantee symptom relief. The guidance does not investigate kapok as a treatment.
Official Danish health guidance covering matters including sleeping on the back, avoiding overheating and the baby sleeping in its own bed in the parents' room. Does not recommend kapok as protection.
