Start with the problem in your bed, not the material: a topper is relevant if you want to change surface comfort; if the main mattress is worn or sagging, assess that first. A densely filled kapok model is worth exploring if you prefer a firm surface, but is not an obvious purchase if you want a soft, enveloping feel. Kapok mattresses also come in layered constructions, so the filling name alone does not determine firmness.

Kapok mattress or kapok mattress topper?
A main mattress needs to work with the bed base. A kapok mattress topper is an additional comfort layer placed on an existing mattress. A thin mattress pad serves a different purpose again.
Ask what role the product was designed for. Two products with kapok in their names may have very different constructions. A topper cannot be expected to compensate for a worn-out or unsuitable main mattress.
Measure the bed's actual sleeping surface and check every layer. A measurement such as 90 x 200 cm tells you only the size, not the layer thickness, firmness or suitability for a particular base.
Try the firmness in practice
Cocoon, for example, describes its densely filled kapok toppers as firm to hard. That makes them worth trying if you want a firmer comfort layer, but not an obvious choice for a soft, enveloping surface. This is the manufacturer's description of its own models, not a test of all kapok mattresses.
A 2021 literature review brought together 39 articles on mattresses, back pain and sleep. It identified possible benefits of medium-firm mattresses for some adults, but the studies varied and were often small.
The review does not establish a benefit of kapok and cannot be used to claim that a harder mattress is always better. Try the specific model and check the trial and return terms.

Can kapok keep house dust mites away?
A study in Thailand followed 60 new mattresses with four types of filling for 12 months. The researchers found house dust mite allergen accumulation on every material type, including kapok. Accumulation was faster on kapok and synthetic mattresses than on the other two types tested.
The study measured allergens in dust, not live mites inside each fibre or users' symptoms. Differences in climate, covers and construction make it unsuitable for ranking all mattresses sold in Denmark. However, it does not support a promise that kapok mattresses are free from mite allergens.

Ventilation and care are part of the choice
Follow the manufacturer's requirements for the bed base, airing, turning and redistributing the filling. Do not apply a general washing guide to a whole mattress without checking the model's instructions.
Keep the mattress dry and act on moisture or odours rather than assuming that natural filling is protected against mould. Kapok is not a substitute for a dry, ventilated sleeping environment.
A particular note on infant mattresses
Guidance for adults cannot be applied to infants. Follow the Danish Health Authority's current recommendations and check that the mattress is intended for the bed and the child's age.
We do not judge a product safe for infants simply because it contains kapok filling. Do not add soft layers on the strength of a material claim.

Can you machine-wash a kapok mattress?
Do not assume so. Follow the specific model's instructions and ask the manufacturer if you are unsure.
Can kapok compensate for a worn-out bed?
A filling material or an extra layer cannot be expected to solve problems caused by a worn-out mattress or an unsuitable base.
