Loose kapok filling is particularly useful for adapting a pillow designed to be opened and adjusted. If the pillow feels too low, a little extra filling can increase height and firmness; if it feels too high, remove filling rather than buying more. Make small adjustments and distribute the fibres evenly. Investigate clumps, odours or dampness before trying to solve the problem with new filling.

What is kapok filling made from?
Kapok consists of seed fibres, typically from Ceiba pentandra. Microscopic examinations show a thin wall surrounding a large cavity. The surface contains wax and is difficult to wet with liquid water.
These are specific material properties. They do not, in themselves, tell you how much filling your pillow needs or whether a finished product transports sweat better than another one.

How to assess a refillable pillow
Height and support in a kapok pillow
- Check that the zip is intended to provide access to the filling, not just to remove the cover.
- Use the filling type and method recommended by the manufacturer. Do not open a quilted duvet or mattress to change its filling.
- Make small adjustments, distribute the fibres evenly and try the pillow on your own mattress.
- Work gently and avoid unnecessary dust dispersal. Keep loose filling dry and out of reach of small children.
Why can the filling change shape?
In a compression experiment, dry and humid kapok fibre assemblies responded differently to pressure. The humid samples recovered less well, and the fibres' hollow structure could be flattened under the tested load.
This supports taking moisture and mechanical stress seriously. The experiment does not establish a particular lifespan or show that extra filling can restore every property of a worn pillow.

Buying loose kapok: what should you check?
Look for information on origin, any blended fibres, treatment and intended use. A bag labelled natural is not, in itself, evidence of organic certification or the absence of particular treatments.
If a product already smells or has been damp, refilling is not a proven solution. Discuss cleaning and possible replacement with the manufacturer.

Can I put kapok filling in any pillow?
No. The product must be designed for adjustment, and the filling and construction need to be compatible.
Is more filling better for your neck?
Not necessarily. The amount of filling changes height and firmness but does not establish better support or less pain.
Sources & limitations
Laboratory study of kapok fibre structure and chemical properties. Microscopy and contact angle measurements show a hollow structure and low wettability with liquid water. The study does not measure sweat transport, sleep or clinical effects.
Laboratory study comparing dry and humid kapok fibre assemblies under conditions including 100 kPa pressure. Explores how filling responds to moisture and loading but does not establish a washing method or a particular lifespan.
